CAC Information
Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC) is a third-party coin authentication service known for its strict, "tough-for-the-grade" standards. CAC is unique because it offers two distinct services for collectors: the original "stickering" service and a more recent full grading service, CAC Grading (CACG).
CAC grading service (CACG)
In 2023, CAC launched its own full-service coin grading company, CACG, to compete with established services like Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). CACG encapsulates coins in its own slabs, applying the same high standards that made its stickers popular.
- Grading process: CACG's grading uses the Sheldon 70-point scale. It is overseen by a team of experienced numismatists, including founder John Albanese.
- Designations: CACG slabs contain various designations that apply to a coin's grade, color, surface, and strike. Examples include:
- Plus (+) grades: Awarded to coins that are "A" quality for their grade, being either very close to the next numerical grade or having exceptional eye appeal.
- Color designations: Apply to copper coins and include Red (RD), Red Brown (RB), and Brown (BN).
- Strike designations: Apply to specific coins, such as Full Bell Lines (FBL) for Franklin Half Dollars or Full Bands (FB) for Mercury Dimes.
- Modern coin delivery designations: These apply to newly issued coins and include labels like First Delivery®, First Day of Delivery®, and Advanced Delivery®.
- Submission: Collectors can submit coins directly to CACG by joining the CAC Grading Club. Dealers can apply for a professional membership.
CAC stickering service
Since its founding in 2007, CAC has offered its stickering service to evaluate coins that have already been graded by PCGS or NGC. This service provides an additional layer of assurance to collectors. Only authorized dealers can submit coins for the stickering service.
- Green sticker: A green "bean" on a coin's slab indicates that the coin is solid for its grade and meets CAC's stringent standards. Green-stickered coins generally command a premium over non-stickered coins in the same grade.
- Gold sticker: A gold "bean" signifies that CAC believes the coin is under graded and is strong for its grade. These coins are often considered exceptional and carry a significant premium.
- No sticker: If a coin does not receive a sticker, it means that CAC considers it low-end for its grade.
How CAC benefits collectors
- Added confidence: CAC's reputation for high-quality grading gives buyers more confidence when purchasing a coin.
- Premium pricing: Due to CAC's stringent standards, both stickered and CACG-graded coins often sell for a premium in the numismatic market.
- Increased market visibility: The use of CAC's services helps differentiate high-quality coins, providing a clearer indication of value to collectors.
